This webinar is look at the challenging subject of remuneration benchmarking and its impact on executive remuneration. Informing the debate will be the initial findings of a new paper in the series of thought leadership papers from ICAEW’s Technical Department. The paper was commissioned from Professor Ruth Bender from the Cranfield University School of Management.
We have two excellent speakers: Professor Ruth Bender from the Cranfield University School of Management and Mark Freebairn from Odgers Berndtson. Professor Ruth Bender is the Professor of Corporate Financial Strategy Policy at Cranfield School of Management. She has been working on a research paper based on a series of interviews with executive compensation consultants learning how they advise Remuneration Committees, how they approach the task, what factors influence their advice and the companies approach to this issue. Mark Freebairn is a Partner and Head of the Financial Management Practice of Odgers Berndtson. Widely regarded as perhaps the most influential man in his sector, Mark will bring his experience recruiting Finance Directors, CFOs and Non-Executive Directors to the debate.

Ruth Bender is a Professor of Corporate Financial Strategy at Cranfield School of Management. Prior to joining Cranfield, she was a partner in Grant Thornton where she specialised in corporate finance, she also worked for a while as an executive in private equity. She is the author of Corporate Financial Strategy, Routledge, currently in its 4th edition. Ruth’s research interest is in the practical implications of corporate governance in large companies, mostly as it affects boards and board committees. In particular, she has worked with remuneration committees and audit committees of listed companies. Her PhD investigated how executive remuneration is determined in FTSE 350 companies, and her current research looks at the work of compensation consultants.
Mark Freebairn is a Partner and Head of the Financial Management Practice of Odgers Berndtson, based in London. The Practice appoints Finance Directors and CFOs across all sectors in a range of businesses, both public and private, and is a leader in its market niche. Mark is also a member of the Board & CEO Practice and is involved with searches for non-executive directorships when the requirement is to appoint a candidate with senior finance experience. Mark is a Non-Executive Director on the Board of Progressive Digital Media Plc, giving him insight into the inner workings of a Plc Board.
