The ‘Pensions Freedoms’ changes introduced in 2015 and the substantial value held in defined benefit pensions (DB) schemes has led to more people seeking advice on whether they should transfer their DB pension pots to a defined contribution (DC) arrangement. For most people this is a complex and significant decision that presents a number of risks and challenges. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has also expressed concern that many financial advisers are not doing this well.
Industry experts will deliver this interactive webinar to help demystify the complex world of DB pension transfers. Areas covered will include:
Peter is a qualified financial adviser, holding the DipPFS qualification (including G10 and G60), and is a member of the Personal Finance Society. Peter specialises in life, pensions, investments, and in understanding and applying the FCA’s approach to conduct regulation.Peter joined Grant Thornton in January 2016 from Lloyds Banking Group, where he was the Head of Group Regulatory Liaison, leading a team to manage the bank’s relationship with the FCA. Peter supported senior executives and Board members with their regulatory engagements, worked with all three lines of defence to complete regulatory actions and analysed FCA output to prepare for future requirements. Peter has extensive experience working with firms on appropriate approaches to DB transfer and DC switch advice.
Rebecca Prestage, Chartered Financial Planner, Grant Thornton
Rebecca, a Chartered Financial Planner, joined Grant Thornton from another consulting organisation. She has over 20 years' experience within regulated firms and specialises in policy and regulation, particularly at how FCA rules impact organisations. At her previous firm she headed up their policy function, providing regulatory updates, creating policy briefings, technical bulletins and white papers relating to regulatory change and conduct risk rules
Vince Smith-Hughes - Director of Specialist Business Support, Prudential
Vince Smith-Hughes is Director of Specialist Business Support at Prudential. He has worked in the financial services profession for over 30 years, and has previous experience as an IFA as well as holding senior pension roles at Clerical Medical and Winterthur Life. Vince is an experienced platform presenter at industry events and a regular contributor to trade and national publications on all matters relating to retirement issues. He is a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society.

John’s work includes helping members to identify opportunities to develop business in the area of PFP advice, managing the ICAEW Personal Financial Planning (PFP) Advisory Group, and liaises with the Financial Conduct Authority and other regulators. John works across different areas of ICAEW, and with external stakeholders, to coordinate work in the area of personal financial planning, investment advice and pensions and to help support the ICAEW Tomorrow’s Practice Project. John began his career as a private client stockbroker & investment manager in the City of London. He then worked as an independent financial adviser for a national IFA; financial planning adviser at a regional ICAEW practice firm; head of personal financial planning at a legal practice; senior manager at Deloitte Wealth Management Ltd; and product development manager for Aviva. John has also held business development, staff training and consultancy roles, and delivered training courses on financial literacy, personal finance, investments and pensions. John has a BA in economic history & social science and an MBA. He is a Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Wealth Manager, Fellow of the Institute of Financial Planning, Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments and Fellow of the Certified Public Accountants Association. John chaired the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments Private Client Examination Panel and represents ICAEW at the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) PFP Expert Working Party. He sat on the FSA working party to help develop the higher examination standards for retail investment advisers under the Retail Distribution Review and represents ICAEW at various regulatory & public policy forums.
