The Annual ICAEW farm tour of Lye Cross Farm will take place in the afternoon of Wednesday 25 September.
The Alvis family have been making the finest Farmhouse Cheese at Lye Cross Farm since 1952, situated at the foot of Somerset’s Mendip Hills a few miles from the village of Cheddar. Today the company employs more than 130 people and has an annual turnover in excess of £26 million. More than 1,000 cows on the three Alvis family farms supply the rich milk to produce a quality range of traditional and organic Cheddars. Whether farming organically or conventionally, there is a total and ongoing commitment to the care of the environment, the animals, employees and education for schoolchildren. There will be an opportunity to visit both the cheese side of the business and the farming side including going into the packing gallery to look at the cheese packing operation along with the cheese stores. There will also be the opportunity for some cheese tasting.
