The data generated from the internet of things (IoT) can be used to improve basic accounting, business analysis and decision-making. But not only that, the IoT opens up opportunities for new business models and strategies. All industries can benefit from this. Examples include insurers monitoring driver behaviours and providing tailored premiums, manufacturers saving costs through preventative maintenance and retailers improving efficiency in their supply chains.

Rick Payne is the author of BAM’s recent report The internet of things and accounting: lessons from China and ICAEW’s expert in building effective finance functions. He has a keen interest in working out how accountants can take advantage of big data through advanced analytics and artificial intelligence. Rick is a qualified accountant and former divisional CFO in financial services. He also has an MSc in Organisational Behaviour and is a qualified trainer and coach. Rick speaks regularly at events in the UK and internationally.
