Day one John Gaskell, Head of Personal Financial Planning, ICAEWJohn Gaskell is Head of Personal Financial Planning ( PFP). He oversees the ICAEW PFP Community and ICAEW’s Personal Financial Planning Advisory Group. His role involves liaising with the Financial Conduct Authority ( FCA) and other regulators, working across different areas of ICAEW and with external stakeholders.John began his career as a private client stockbroker & investment manager in the City of London before working as an independent financial adviser for a national IFA, financial planning adviser at a regional ICAEW firm, head of personal financial planning at a legal practice, senior manager at Deloitte Wealth Management Ltd, and product development manager at Aviva. He has also held business development, staff training and consultancy roles.John chaired the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments Private Client Examination Panel and represents ICAEW at the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) PFP Expert Working Party, and was a member of the FSA examination standards working party. John has a BA in Economic History & Social Science, and an MBA. He is a Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Wealth Manager and Fellow of the Certified Public Accountants Association.
George Lagarias, Chief Economist, Mazars UKGeorge joined Mazars in 2016 and is currently the Chief Economist at Mazars Wealth Management, based in London. George has 15 years experience in financial markets as an analyst, investment strategist, economist and fund manager. He has worked for British asset managers EFG and Close Brothers as well as Greek wealth managers Alpha Bank, Eurobank and Marfin.
Luke Brooks, Director, Tilney Smith & WilliamsonLuke joined Smith & Williamson in 2005 after attaining the Advanced Financial Planning Certificate (AFPC) qualification with Kingston Smith Chartered Accountants. Luke is a Director in the Personal Financial Planning team and advises partners of law firms, entrepreneurs, sports professionals and other private clients on their financial planning needs, specialising in pension funding and retirement planning. Since joining Smith & Williamson Luke has completed the Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning and was granted Chartered Financial Planner status in 2007 following distinctions in several of the exams, including Pension Funding Options, Investment Planning and Pension Planning.
Philip Sutton, Chartered financial Planner, Tavistock Philip has been in financial services since 2003. During his career, he has worked within two Private Banks, a top- five accountancy practice and two smaller independent firms. He has a unique insight into both the Business and Private sector, as well as working with Accountants. Philip is a Fellow with the Chartered Institute of Insurance.
Jatin Patel, Founding Partner, Kinnison LimitedJatin is a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser. After leaving KPMG in 1998 he spent 12 years at Citibank Group as a Tax Director, working within the Private Bank on tax and wealth structuring for the bank’s UHNW and international clients. During his time at Citibank Jatin developed tax eﬃcient cross-border debt ﬁnancing and real estate fund structures for UHNW clients. In 2010, Jatin moved to UBS as an Executive Director within Wealth Management, working in the Wealth Planning team. He specialised in tax and wealth structuring for the bank’s HNW/UHNW and worked closely with onshore and offshore trustees. Jatin is a co-founder of Kinnison and has significant experience working with clients’ tax advisers (Kinnison does not provide specific tax advice).
Kate Faulkner, UK Property Expert, PropertychecklistsKate is passionate that many problems in the residential property market can be solved if the media, industry and government work together to educate consumers on how to carry out property projects. To aid this, she has set up Propertychecklists and working groups for Home Buying and Selling and The Lettings Industry Council.
John Chew, Pension, Tax and Estate planning specialist, Canada LifeJohn has over 30 years' experience working with advisers to help them navigate the broader issues of retirement and estate planning. Most recently, John was Commercial Director at Fidelity International, responsible for the strategy and business plan for Fidelity Retirement Services. Prior to Fidelity, John worked at Legal and General as Product and Funds Director in the savings business. Having helped establish trust companies, spoken on pension, estate planning topics and the use of lifetime mortgages in planning, he brings a wealth of experience from a broad-ranging career with thorough knowledge of pensions, investments, estate planning and the platform market.
Sam Pitts-Tucker, Senior Client Advisor, NetwealthSam has more than 12 years’ experience advising and investing on behalf of HNW and UHNW clients, joining Netwealth in 2017 from EFG Asset Management. He is an Oxford University graduate, a CFA charter holder and a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments.
Iain Barnes, Head of Portfolio Management, NetwealthIain has 20 years of investing multi-asset portfolios at Netwealth, UBS and Schroders. Experience with institutional and HNW clients across active and passive strategies. Iain has been a CFA charter holder since 2003.
Paul Speight, Head of Key Account Development, Canada Life Paul has worked in the long-term savings market for over 20 years. Having worked in the Pension & Platform marketplace he is the Head of Strategic Account Development responsible for building and managing the key partnerships with major UK advisory businesses, Institutions and 3rd parties.
Alan Milstein, Chairman, Residential Property Surveyors Association (RPSA)Alan retrained as a surveyor following a successful sales and marketing career, going on to achieve a Professional Diploma in Historic Building Conservation & Repair. As a founder member of RPSA, Alan became chairman in 2012 and has helped it grow to become the leading professional organisation for independent residential surveyors.
Eric Clapton, Director, Clapton ConsultantsEric has over 25 years’ experience as a qualified financial adviser and investment manager, with a particular interest in pension and retirement planning. He was previously a senior partner of a regional firm and latterly as the Managing Director of a successful discretionary investment manager. He is the principal of Clapton Consultants, a chartered accountancy practice that specialises in the financial services sector, offering services to both business and private clients. Eric is an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.
Mark Devlin, Senior Technical Manager, Prudential UKMark is a member of Prudential's Technical team, based in Edinburgh. Mark has worked in the industry since 1998 and has held a variety of roles in financial planning (mortgage packaging, sales support, Paraplanner, IFA and Business Assurance). This has given him a depth of knowledge on the planning side of the business. Mark had a leaning towards pensions in previous roles and now specialises in this area within the Technical Team. Mark is also a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society.
Paul Garwood, Director, Head of Personal Financial Planning, Tilney Smith & WilliamsonPaul is a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Tax Adviser, a member of STEP and Fellow of the Personal Finance Society who specialises in financial planning for high net worth individuals and families. He joined Smith & Williamson in 1996 and is head of personal financial planning. He has 30 years of professional experience and is able to call upon a wide range of skills when advising clients. His expertise in financial planning and tax related matters extends to overseas tax, investment and pension issues, and he advises, primarily, executives and professionals from a wide range of business disciplines as well as high net worth families.
Vince Smith-Hughes, Director of Specialist Business Support, PrudentialVince has worked in the financial services profession for over 30 years, and has experience as an IFA, as well as holding senior pension roles at Clerical Medical and Winterthur Life. He is an experienced presenter and a regular contributor to trade and national publications on matters relating to retirement
Nicky Walden, Co-Founder, KinnisonNicky set up the bespoke lending team at Investec Private Bank, leading it for 12 years. It focused on secured facilities on residential property and owner-occupied commercial property, complemented by lending against investment portfolios and quoted stocks. In 2011 she moved to JP Morgan Private Bank as an Executive Director.
Richard Bertin, Founder and Ceo, TetherRichard Bertin is a Chartered Accountant, former chair of various committees and current ICAEW Personal Financial Planning Advisory Group member. He established and built up a successful fee-based wealth planning business, selling a stake in 2016 to Stonehage Fleming, the largest independent family office in EMEA. He continued to further build the group’s private client financial planning arm before leaving last year to establish Tether, which is launching personal financial planning software to the accounting profession, combining his previous accountancy and business development experience and knowledge.
Charlotte Fairhurst, Strategic Partnerships Manager, Octopus InvestmentsCharlotte has spearheaded Octopus’ professional connections initiatives for three years supporting financial advisers, accountants and solicitors develop their referral relationships. Having worked closely with professional bodies, such as ICAEW, STEP and SOLLA, Charlotte has a wealth of experience in championing successful referral relationships.
Dean Neaves, Senior Manager, Quality Assurace, ICAEWDean joined ICAEW in 2016. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PwC and spent more than 20 years in the audit practice working with clients from small start-up techn businesses to larger listed groups. He also worked on several transactions, including IPO’s, fundraising and acquisitions.
David Norris, Director, MerciaDavid is responsible for reviews, manuals and technical queries service lines at Mercia. He joined SWAT UK in 2000 as an audit lecturer and reviewer. In 2014, he was appointed to the Board as Training Director before moving onto his current role when Mercia purchased SWAT UK in 2016.
Chris Greenhalgh FCA BFP, Manager, ICAEWChris joined the Quality Assurance Department (QAD) of ICAEW in 2013, having previously been a senior manager in a regional sized practice working in the areas of audit, accounts and tax.
