Event Information

The webinar would be of interest to anyone considering making a move from a practice or established corporate world into a start-up, as well as those with portfolio careers who are exploring expanding their portfolio into this space.

In this “Question Time” event we will be asking our panellists many of the questions you may be considering such as:

  • What made you want to work at a start-up?
  • How did you get your first role?
  • What does a typical day look like?
  • What advice would you give others starting out and of course what about risk, job security and salary in an environment that can be exhilarating but also precarious?

Our panel is drawn from members at different stages of their careers. Prakash Shah is a vastly experienced senior CFO and is Group CFO at uMotif, has his own business and is co-founder of Start-Up CFO.Joe Adams has a passion for the gaming industry and is soon to announce his next venture, having been at King when Candy Crush launched.Laura Beales is Head of Finance at Florence and has her own side hussle and Joe Gallard went from FD at carwow to becoming a start-up entrepreneur, launching his own business when he founded Reducer in 2018.

Join the event to hear insights and experience and pose your own questions to get the answers you won’t get elsewhere.

Joe Gallard, CEO and Co-founder, Reducer
Joe is a qualified accountant who started in audit before leading finance teams at a couple of high growth tech businesses. In 2018 based on a pain point he had experienced, Joe founded Reducer which uses accounting data to perform price comparison for businesses.

Joe Adams, Kepler Interactive
Joe studied Music and sang in a choir, but that’s only half the story, finding his true calling with numbers and spreadsheets. After training in specialised practice, followed by a few years in recorded music and startups, he joined King just as Candy Crush was about to become a hit, scaling from 150 people to 1,500, and revenues from $50M to $2Bn. A year after their IPO he left to join Space Ape Games. Three years later Space Ape having scaled to $30M revenues and 120 people successfully sold to Supercell / Tencent, the only names bigger than King in mobile gaming. In 2018 he joined Plum Guide, a travel ecommerce site where he has helped raise over £30M through Series B allowing them to scale successfully and sustainably. At the end of 2020 Joe left Plum and, as well as now advising various startups, has joined a new venture full-time, of which he hopes to be able to share more soon! Joe has a passion for helping companies grow and scale and leading finance and operation teams to success.

Prakash Shah, Group Chief Financial Officer, uMotif
Prakash Shah has more than 20 years’ experience in finance and qualified as an ACA in 1998. The first part of his career was in blue-chip City institutions such as Nomura, Barclays, M&G, UBS and JP Morgan. After the crash in 2009 Prakash established an independent and interim career and now works with small, high growth businesses, taking them from pre-seed through to series A and B rounds of funding, usually as the CFO or COO. He is the co-founder of StartupCFO, a network for like-minded finance professionals, runs his own portfolio and is CFO of uMotif.

Laura Beales, Head of Finance, Florence

Laura ACA qualified at KPMG where she worked in audit and management consultancy. Her first startup role was at The Accountancy Cloud where she managed a portfolio of over 200 tech startups acting as their outsourced accountancy team. Her first in-house role was as Head of Finance at Healthcare Marketplace Florence supporting 163% revenue growth and £5m Series A raise fundraise. She recently founded her own company Tally marketplace which helps startups and SMEs find flexible workspaces across the UK.
