The overarching challenge we all face is decarbonization of our daily lives at home and at work. The urgency is such that the 2050 horizon proposed by our political leaders is too far out – recent IPCC data clearly so confirms. Silo approaches along singular technology paths are insufficient – systemic analysis and implementation are required leading to the integration of a broad range of energy production, transmission & distribution, storage and end-use technologies. Electricity clearly is the preferred energy vector as set the path toward a low-carbon future. The priority on low-carbon reopens the nuclear energy dilemma.

Prof. Hans B. (Teddy) Püttgen, PhD.Teddy Püttgen was born in Stockholm; he completed his secondary as well as engineering and management studies in Switzerland. He then received a fellowship from the Swiss Federal Science Foundation to pursue doctoral studies in the United States. Having completed the PhD and after five years on the faculty of Electrical Engineering at the California State University at Fresno, in 1981, he accepted a faculty position at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia Tech, in Atlanta. Teddy Püttgen is Georgia Power Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Georgia Tech. He retired from EPFL in July 2013; he now holds the title of Professeur Honoraire. Between the end of 2013 and May 2017, Teddy Püttgen accepted the position of Visiting Professor in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department and Nanyang Technological University, NTU in Singapore. At NTU he also served as Senior Director of the Energy Research centre. He conceived and was responsible for the launch of the Renewable Energy Integration Demonstrator. REIDS is co- funded by the Singapore government along with leading corporations worldwide. Nominated by the Swiss Federal government, Teddy Püttgen served on the Swilss Federal Commission for Energy Researc, CORE, between 2006 and 2015. Professor Püttgen holds the Ingenieur Diplome Electricien, MSEE degree from EPFL. He holds management degrees from the University of Lausanne. His PhD, in Electrical Engineering, electric power option, is from the University of Florida. Teddy Püttgen is a Fellow of IEEE the largest professional engineering association in the world. He served as President of the Power and Energy Society, PES, of IEEE. He is a recipient of the IEEE Third Millennium Medal. He is a past recipient of the Outstanding Young Professor award if the American Society for Engineering Education.
