James is a Corporate Tax Partner in BDO's London office. He joined them in 2016, having worked at a Big 4 firm since 1999.
James leads our Tax Risk Assurance practice in London that specialises in providing advice to clients in the area of tax operating performance, tax transparency and tax risk management, specifically focusing on Sarbanes Oxley, SAO, CCO, tax strategy, tax risk and governance. James provides advice to clients that enables them to improve their tax performance and gain assurance over their tax risk and regulatory requirements.
James has worked with all businesses from multinational FTSE100 companies to fast growth SMEs.
James is published in the area of tax risk and control, including in the BNAI Special Report on Tax Risk and in IBFD’s “Tax Risk Management: From Risk to Opportunity” and is often quoted in the press, including the FT.
Carrie is a prize winning chartered accountant and chartered tax advisor with significant experience of leading some of the largest and most complex R&D and Patent Box claims in the software, telecommunications and financial services sectors. She also has practical hand-on experience of working with companies preparing for an exit and the R&D considerations that are important to them.
Prior to specialising in the taxation of innovation, she spent 12 years in senior finance roles in the financial services industry, including as Finance Director of a capital markets start up and as Head of Accounting and Regulatory policy for the private equity arm of a major high street bank.
Karen leads BDO’s Tax Risk & Assurance services in Yorkshire and the North East and is a core part of BDO’s national Tax Risk team, with over 16 years’ experience. She supports businesses with various aspects of tax assurance and risk management, including Senior Accounting Officer, Tax Strategy, HMRC’s Business Risk Review +, Corporate Criminal Offences and the wider Tax Control Framework. Karen is also experienced in leading complex HMRC disputes, and sits within BDO’s national Tax Disputes Resolution team.
