Our member spotlight series hears from an ICAEW member in the region each month, bringing together ICAEW Chartered Accountants from across the region for a regular virtual meeting.
In May 2021, our ICAEW Member Spotlight featured Simon Lamb, Managing Director, Audit & Investigations at Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance.
Simon has been with Gavi since 2013 and speaks passionately about its extraordinary mission – “the best kept secret in global health”.
In the face of this unprecedented pandemic, Gavi is working with its Alliance partners and eligible countries to support the COVID-19 response whilst maintaining routine immunisation (Gavi’s core mission).
Gavi is co-leading the COVAX Facility – with the World Health Organisation, and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and alongside key delivery partner UNICEF. COVAX aims to achieve a global vaccine response to COVID-19 that is effective and fair, drawing upon the expertise of its partners to help identify and rapidly accelerate development, production and delivery of COVID-19 vaccines - “we’re not safe until everyone’s safe”.
Yet the vaccine response to COVID-19 is not all the organisation is about. Since its set-up in 2000, the Gavi Alliance has enabled the vaccination of more than 800 million children preventing more than 14 million future deaths through its support of eligible countries’ immunisation programmes. It supports 73 low income countries in developing and executing their immunisation programmes with an annual budget approaching $2 billion. Risk doesn’t come more challenging!

Caroline Newton - Member Engagement Manager, Europe
Simon is responsible for the Audit & Investigations (A&I) function, whose mission is “to safeguard Gavi’s resources that help save lives by providing independent and objective assurance on risk.” The department covers four functions: Internal Audit; Programme Audit; Investigations and Counter-Fraud; and Whistleblower Reporting.
As a UK Chartered Accountant with a degree in Economics from the University of Liverpool and a diploma in Business Studies from Manchester Business School, Simon brings more than 40 years of experience in audit, management consultancy and finance (with PriceWaterhouse Coopers, Goldman Sachs and BlackRock). He has had senior management experience with exposure to diverse multicultural work environments including London, Nairobi, New York, and now, Geneva.
With a passion for Gavi, and while balancing the need for A&I’s independence with an emphasis on management engagement, Simon has aimed to develop a fresh construct of audit. This is based on maintaining a rigorous perspective on risk while being stakeholder-oriented.
