About the speakers

John Gaskell, Head of Personal Financial Planning, ICAEW
John Gaskell is Head of Personal Financial Planning ( PFP). He oversees the ICAEW PFP Community and ICAEW’s Personal Financial Planning Advisory Group. His role involves liaising with the Financial Conduct Authority ( FCA) and other regulators, working across different areas of ICAEW and with external stakeholders.John began his career as a private client stockbroker & investment manager in the City of London before working as an independent financial adviser for a national IFA, financial planning adviser at a regional ICAEW firm, head of personal financial planning at a legal practice, senior manager at Deloitte Wealth Management Ltd, and product development manager at Aviva. He has also held business development, staff training and consultancy roles.John chaired the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments Private Client Examination Panel and represents ICAEW at the Global Accounting Alliance (GAA) PFP Expert Working Party, and was a member of the FSA examination standards working party. John has a BA in Economic History & Social Science, and an MBA. He is a Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Wealth Manager and Fellow of the Certified Public Accountants Association.

Iain Barnes, Head of Portfolio Management, Netwealth
Iain joined Netwealth in January 2016 from UBS Asset Management to launch the Netwealth investment portfolios in May of that year. He leads the Netwealth investment process and holds ultimate responsibility for portfolio performance. At UBS he was an Executive Director and senior portfolio manager in the Global Investment Solutions division. In addition to managing multi-asset portfolios totalling £2 billion, he was one of 6 voting members of the Global Asset Allocation and Currency Investment Committee which was responsible for more than £60 billion of assets under management, including for pension funds, charitable trusts, foundations and high net worth individuals. He also led the team’s research across fixed income and selected alternative investment asset classes. Prior to joining UBS in 2010, Iain spent 10 years at Schroders where he was a multi-asset portfolio manager for institutional and individual clients. Iain has been a CFA charter holder since 2003.

Sarah Thwaites, Director, Thwaites Associates
Sarah has a broad ranging knowledge and experience gained from senior executive and non-executive roles in the financial services sector. She is a compelling and authentic ambassador for organisations, with experience in promoting solutions in the UK and abroad.

Richard Bertin, Founder and Ceo, Tether
Richard Bertin is a Chartered Accountant, former chair of various committees and current ICAEW Personal Financial Planning Advisory Group member. He established and built up a successful fee-based wealth planning business, selling a stake in 2016 to Stonehage Fleming, the largest independent family office in EMEA. He continued to further build the group’s private client financial planning arm before leaving last year to establish Tether, which is launching personal financial planning software to the accounting profession, combining his previous accountancy and business development experience and knowledge.

Luke Brooks, Head of Financial Planning, Smith & Williamson
Luke joined Smith & Williamson in 2005 after attaining the AFPC qualification with Kingston Smith Chartered Accountants. As Head of Financial planning he advises private clients on their financial planning needs, specialising in pension funding and retirement planning.

Olivia Bucher, Financial Planner, Mazars Financial Planning
Olivia joined Mazars in 2019 as a Financial Planner in the Sutton office where she looks after private clients and owner-managed businesses in in the areas of pension and retirement planning, investment planning, protection and tax planning strategies. She holds the Investment Advice Diploma and Chartered member status with the CISI. She is currently working towards also achieving Chartered Financial Planner status with the CII.

Eric Clapton, Director, Clapton Consultants
Eric has over 25 years’ experience as a qualified financial adviser and investment manager, with a particular interest in pension and retirement planning. He was previously a senior partner of a regional firm and latterly as the Managing Director of a successful discretionary investment manager. He is the principal of Clapton Consultants, a chartered accountancy practice that specialises in the financial services sector, offering services to both business and private clients. Eric is an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.

Mark Devlin, Senior Technical Manager, M&G Prudential
Mark has worked in the industry since 1998. He has held a variety of roles in financial planning which has given him a very broad knowledge on the planning side of the industry. Mark specialises in pensions and is a Chartered Financial Planner and Fellow of the Personal Finance Society.

Graduated with an MA honours in English from St Andrews University and joined Ruffer in 2017 as part of the graduate trainee programme. She is a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment following completion of the CISI Masters in Wealth Management.

Rachel Holdsworth, Ruffer
Rachel joined Ruffer in 2013 after graduating from Oxford University with a first class honours degree in biological sciences. She is a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment following completion of the CISI Masters in Wealth Management, receiving a distinction in both the Private Client Investment Advice and Management and Portfolio Construction Theory papers.

Dean Neaves, Senior Manager, Quality Assurace, ICAEW
Dean joined ICAEW in 2016. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PwC and spent more than 20 years in the audit practice working with clients from small start-up techn businesses to larger listed groups. He also worked on several transactions, including IPO’s, fundraising and acquisitions.

Jason Porter, Business Development Director, Blevins Franks
Jason has an Honours Degree in History and Politics, and is a Chartered Tax Adviser and qualified financial planner. Jason trained at Ernst & Young, and subsequently spent over five years with Coutts Private Bank. It was whilst at Coutts he realised not all the solutions to client needs were available in the tax space, and extended his advice base to financial planning. After an interesting sideways move into media for five years, Jason put his combined tax and financial planning skills to work again, joining Credit Suisse Private Bank as a Director, providing wealth-planning advice to ultra-high net worth clients. He joined Blevins Franks Financial Management Limited in February 2014, as the UK Business Development Director.

James Robinson, Chartered Financial Planner, Mazars Financial Planning
James is a Chartered Financial Planner and Fellow of the PFS, responsible for leading the Financial Planning team in London. His achievements have been recognised by Citywire Magazine four years in a row, being named one of the ‘Top 35 Next Generation Advisers’ 2017-2020. He was also runner up in the FT’s Money Management Award for Multi-Asset Planner of the year 2018. James’s focus is building lasting relationships with clients, helping them to maximise family wealth and meet clients’ objectives.
