About the speakers

Dr David Christian Rose, Change in Agriculture group, University of Reading
Dr David Christian Rose leads the Change in Agriculture group at the University of Reading. He is the Elizabeth Creak Associate Professor of Agricultural Innovation and Extension. He received his Bachelors (first-class) in Geography from the University of Cambridge, followed by a Masters in Geographical Research and a PhD (Geography) from the same university. He was Director of Studies in Geography at Gonville and Caius College (2015-17). After short post-docs at Cambridge and UCL, he took a Lectureship position in Human Geography at the UEA. He joined Reading in October 2019. His academic interests centre around the social impacts of agriculture 4.0, including extension, behaviour change, and ethics of new technologies. He is also interested in policy co-design and farmer mental health. He is co-Director of the Centre for Effective Innovation in Agriculture. 

Dr Laurence Smith, Lecturer in Agricultural Business Management, University of Reading
Dr Laurence Smith is a Lecturer in Agricultural Business Management at the University of Reading, and the coordinator for PATHWAYS (a 9M EUR Horizon 2020 project) involving 30 partners across Europe in the development of policy pathways for sustainable livestock systems in Europe. He has over 12 years’ experience in leading projects and tasks within multinational collaborative projects in Europe and he is co-leading a UK Global Food Security Programme project investigating the sustainability costs and benefits of Pasture Fed Livestock Farming, SEEGSLIP. Laurence focuses on the development and application of tools and metrics for sustainability assessment to reveal trade-offs and synergies from innovations within food systems. Recent research has focused on the impacts of converting to organic farming at a UK and global scale.

Keith Phillips FCA, Vice Chair of ICAEW Farming &Rural Business Community (Chair)
Keith qualified in 1987 with ICAEW and is director of Duncan and Toplis, a firm centred in Lincolnshire but has 11 accountancy offices with over 400 staff covering most of the East Midlands. He is lead director of an office of around 26 staff and is a general practitioner looking after mainly family run businesses with a bias of around 60% towards agricultural or ancillary industry businesses. Client size runs from quite small self employed clients to companies with around £60 million turnover.
