IFRS 15 Revenue from Contracts with Customers – which became effective for annual periods beginning on or after 1 January 2018 – established a comprehensive framework for determining when revenue should be recognised and how it should be measured.

The core principle is that an entity should recognise revenue when it transfers goods or services to a customer based upon the amount of consideration to which the entity expects to be entitled from the customer. The goods or services are transferred when the customer has control of them.

This course will provide an overview of IFRS 15, with a focus on exploring the common application challenges relating to both point in time and over time revenue recognition and measurement. Examples will be used throughout to explain key concepts and illustrate their application.

Learning outcomes:
Attendees will gain an understanding of:

  • The five-step approach to determining how and when to recognise revenue
  • How to apply the standard in practice
  • How to account for contract modifications
  • When to capitalise contract costs
  • Presentation & disclosure requirements

Who should attend?

Aimed at finance professionals reporting under IFRS, relevant across all sectors. You will not only gain technical understanding of the standard, but also appreciate both the commercial impact and key risk areas for your organisation.

Other related courses

We are excited to offer this suite of 3 training topics that, together, provides an accounting walk-through of the integration of a newly acquired business into a group:

  • 'Accounting for business acquisitions and goodwill' focuses on accounting for the initial acquisition of a business
  • 'Simplifying group accounting' provides practical guidance on group consolidation which covers a broad scope, including that for a newly acquired group entity
  • 'Confidence with impairments (non-financial institutions)' provides an understanding of impairments with reference to each of the typical assets in the Balance Sheet of a non-financial institution, including those assets acquired in a business combination and goodwill

Whereas these 3 training topics complement each other to provide the complete accounting journey for a newly acquired business, each of them would also offer significant value on its own as they have been designed to have a holistic scope that is much broader than that which is relevant to a newly acquired business.

What is a virtual classroom?

A virtual classroom provides the same great learning experience as other ICAEW training, except one difference, you can learn from your desk.

Being delivered online makes it so much easier to access in a busy working week and would definitively recommend this type of training. The breakout rooms work really well to allow you to get to know the other participants and share experiences.

Virtual classroom delegate

The focus is on the learner and creating an enriching classroom experience that connects participants globally. Using video, learners can converse and interact with the trainer and other learners in real-time. Whiteboards, break-out sessions, polls, screen-sharing, and interactive Q&A create an immersive learning experience.

I think the virtual training format using Zoom, and the survey features, and break out rooms, really works great. I had no problems engaging with the facilitator and felt he listened to what we said, and kept the pace of the content moving steadily.
