Legal update: disputes and other current legal issues relevant to GP practices
Oliver Pool, Partner, Veale Wasbrough Vizards will present an update on legal issues over the past years which have affected GP practices. This will include a variety of issues from how best to structure and "in and out" takeover, the latest position on TRS, the rules on golden hellos, to encouraging clients to use probationary periods even in times when new partners are hard to find.

In this pre-recorded session James Gransby, Partner at RSM, will look at several hot topic areas including the 23/24 GP contract update, surgery ownership in light of high interest rates, Final Pay Controls update, high earner disclosure requirements, amongst other topics.

In this session Paula Peppas from the NHS Stakeholder Pensions team will provide their annual update with a focus on the Annual Allowance and an update on the Mcloud Remedy.

About the speakers

Adam Thompson, Director, Primary Care Surveyor
Adam has over 25 years’ experience as a chartered surveyor specialising in the primary care sector. He acts for numerous GP practices as well as property developers, investors, banks and pharmacy operators. Much of his time is spent on the development of new medical centres but he also undertakes valuations, rent reviews and investment transactions.

Dr. Ed Cantelo, GP, Chartered Accountant, Chartered Tax Adviser, Medics' Money
Dr Ed Cantelo is a GP but also a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax adviser and has co-founded Medics' Money. Medics' Money gives doctors the financial education they need and connects doctors to the best specialist accountants. They co-host the Medics' Money podcast which has over 500,000 downloads, write a weekly email read by over 40,000 doctors and a website used by thousands of doctors each month.

Graham Crossley, Director, Medifintech
Graham is a widely acknowledged industry expert on NHS pensions. He is the founder of Medifintech.co.uk, who provide NHS pension support for members, Financial Advisers and Accountants. He is a regular commentator on NHS pension issues in the National and Trade Press, as well as appearing on TV. He has successfully lobbied government for changes to benefit NHS pension members, as well as providing technical expertise to Unions and other organisations.

James Gransby, Partner, RSM
James has worked in the sector for over two decades and holds the role of Vice Chair of The Association of Independent Specialist Medical Accountants, whose members act for almost half of all GPs in the country. James spends his time working with doctors and GP practices and writes for national publications on topical matters affecting GPs.

Katie Collin, Partner, Ramsay Brown
Katie is a Partner at Ramsay Brown, dealing with technical accounting and superannuation issues, and specialising in corporate matters within the medical sector. She also focuses on financial issues surrounding PCNs, including VAT, financial governance and liability management. Katie was selected as the leading accountant under 30 to represent the Institute internationally at One Young World in 2016.

Oliver Pool, Partner, Veale Wasbrough Vizards
Oliver has been acting for GPs practices since 2005 and his firm VWV has acted for over 2000 GP practices. He advises GP practices and helps with all aspects of the partnership relationship, from putting in place the GP partnership deed and advising on its terms, to dealing with disputes between partners and between PCNs.

 

Paula Peppas, Senior Technical Consultant, NHS Pensions
Paula has extensive knowledge of both NHS Pension Schemes as well as overarching pensions legislation. She worked on the 2015 NHS Pension Scheme implementation project and was the technical lead on annual allowance and scheme pays. Since October 2019, Paula has been seconded four days a week to the Department of Health and Social Care as a Senior Pensions Policy Manager, predominantly working on the McCloud.

Richard Jones, Technical Manager, Business Tax, ICAEW
Richard joined the ICAEW Tax Faculty in November 2020,coordinating the work of ICAEW on business tax and tax compliance & investigations matters and manage the committees related to these areas. Richard is a regular contributor to TAXline, newswire and IACEW’s Insights Podcast. Richard began his tax career at PwC where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2001. 

Dr Richard Van Mellaerts, GP
Richard is a GP partner in Kingston Upon Thames taking a clinical interest in men’s health and mental health. He has been co-clinical director of Kingston PCN since it’s creation, and has been clinical lead for a large local vaccine site at Kingston university. He is a local GP federation medical director responsible for unscheduled care and vice chair of Kingston LMC. Since 2017 he has been South West London representative to GPC England, sitting on the working at scale subcommittee responsible for PCNs. Outside of work he enjoys sport and music, cycling regularly and playing guitar.

Dr. Tommy Perkins, GP, Medics' Money
