Thomas Brown, Senior Policy Adviser and Basis Period Reform Lead, HMRCTom is a Senior Policy Adviser in the Business Profits team at HMRC, covering policy for trading income and miscellaneous income. Tom has lead the development of basis period reform since the policy was first considered, and is currently focusing on the remaining policy issue of provisional figures as well as working on the reform's implementation. Prior to working in policy, Tom was a tax specialist working in compliance as part of HMRC's Large Business Directorate.
Richard Jones, Richard joined the Tax Faculty in November 2020 he coordinates the work of ICAEW on business tax and tax compliance & investigations matters and manages the committees related to these areas. Richard is a regular contributor to TAXline, newswire and ICAEW’s Insights Podcast.Richard began his tax career at PwC where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2001. He looked after a range of clients from small owner-managed businesses through to the UK operations of large multi-national banks. He also spent time on secondment to the firm's learning and development team, managing the learning requirements of a UK-wide intake of corporate tax students.Richard has spent most of his career since then in the National Tax teams of firms such as PKF, BDO, RSM and most recently, Mazars. He has been involved in work covering knowledge management, training, tax standards reviews and other risk management matters, as well as keeping staff and partners in those firms up to date with the latest news and developments in the world of UK and international tax. His technical expertise lies especially in the direct tax issues facing small companies, OMBs and their owners.
