Event information

This presentation considers any new lessons learned from the failure of Silicon Valley Bank, and how speed of contagion risk in banking is amplified through social media news transmission. The author introduces a new short-term version of the standard “Liquidity Coverage Ratio” termed the 7-day “Liquid Cash Ratio” to address this additional factor in liquidity risk management.

About the speakers

Professor Moorad Choudhry
Founder, The Certificate of Bank Treasury Risk Management
Moorad Choudhry is an independent non-executive director at Recognise Bank Limited in London and a non-executive director at the Loughborough Building Society. He is Honorary Professor at University of Kent Business School.

Moorad is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment, a Fellow of the London Institute of Banking and Finance, a Fellow of the Global Association of Risk Professionals, a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and a Freeman of The Worshipful Company of International Bankers. He is author of The Principles of Banking (John Wiley & Sons 2012, 2022).

Moorad was born in Bangladesh and lives in Surrey, England. He was educated at Claremont Fan Court school, the University of Westminster and the University of Reading. He obtained his MBA from Henley Business School and his PhD from Birkbeck, University of London.

 

Simon Gibbs, Banking and Insurance Manager, Financial Services Faculty
Simon joined the ICAEW in September 2022. Prior to that, he worked at the Financial Service Authority and latterly the Prudential Regulation Authority. At the regulator he undertook a variety of roles focused on prudential supervision: the roles included supervising a major UK bank, Pillar 2 and ring-fencing policy making, and running the PRA’s skilled person’s regime. He is a qualified chartered accountant.

 

Polly Tsang, Financial Services Regulatory Manager Financial Services Faculty
Prior to joining the ICAEW, Polly specialised in structured finance and asset backed securitisation at PwC, helping firms raise debt market funding and buy/sell asset pools. She qualified as an ACA with PwC London within investment management and banking and capital markets. She is interested in exploring the risks and opportunities in regulating financial services in the post-Brexit landscape, particularly in evolving areas such as ESG, cryptoassets and AI.
