A copy of the course booking confirmation email is accepted as evidence of verifiable CPD. You will need to save the email as a JPEG or PDF before uploading it to your record.

Click here to use ICAEW’s self-assessment tool to help you work out how much CPD you will need to fulfil each year.

Who should attend?

This is an introductory course for anyone producing Excel based financial analysis and insight for decision makers. Although the course specifically refers to investment appraisal, it is also an excellent introduction to financial modelling techniques.

Introduction to the course

Model Structure and Construction

Best practice principles for building a dynamic model with maximum flexibility for scenarios and alternative assumptions. Power modelling techniques and short cuts, such as Range Names and Cell Styles, will be shown that can help accelerate development and produce a more robust and user friendly product
Assumption Profiles The concepts of ‘seed’ and ‘behaviour’ for developing assumption profiles that are used to forecast each aspect of an investment’s potential. Techniques to dynamically link costs, assets (and replacement of assets) and working capital to revenue are demonstrated. The benefit of Sparklines will be shown.
Scenario Development How to build a scenario sheet using OFFSET and instantly switch between alternatives. The importance of having only one model to explore all potential options rather than a set of separate models will be explained.
Valuation Techniques A demonstration of the key investment appraisal tools of NPV, payback and IRR (including common errors that are made when they are used). The application of a cost of capital, risk weighting and the use of hurdle rates for investment proposals will be explained.
Audit and Checking of Validity Using a series of examples and short exercises a range of validating principles will be covered. This will include stress testing, zeroing and consistency checking.
Welcome Page Model documentation and change log to guide users and control development.
Surgery Common problems encountered by participants in completing investment proposals and building models, a sharing of experiences amongst the group.
End Course review and close

What is a virtual classroom?

A virtual classroom provides the same great learning experience as other ICAEW training, except one difference, you can learn from your desk.

Being delivered online makes it so much easier to access in a busy working week and would definitively recommend this type of training. The breakout rooms work really well to allow you to get to know the other participants and share experiences.

Virtual classroom delegate

The focus is on the learner and creating an enriching classroom experience that connects participants globally. Using video, learners can converse and interact with the trainer and other learners in real-time. Whiteboards, break-out sessions, polls, screen-sharing, and interactive Q&A create an immersive learning experience.

I think the virtual training format using Zoom, and the survey features, and break out rooms, really works great. I had no problems engaging with the facilitator and felt he listened to what we said, and kept the pace of the content moving steadily.
