A copy of the course booking confirmation email is accepted as evidence of verifiable CPD. You will need to save the email as a JPEG or PDF before uploading it to your record. Click here to use ICAEW’s self-assessment tool to help you work out how much CPD you will need to fulfil each year.

Who should attend?

This is an introductory course for anyone producing Excel based financial analysis and insight for decision makers. Although the course specifically refers to investment appraisal, it is also an excellent introduction to financial modelling techniques.

Introduction to the course

Refresh Model Structure and Construction from Module 1

Best practice principles for building a dynamic model, assumption profiles, scenarios sheets and valuation.
Introduction to Macros and Visual Basic An interactive session to start using Macros and Visual Basic covering controls, coding, cell referencing, offsets, loops, conditions and formatting. A set of short examples will be used ready for the following session when their practical business application will be demonstrated.
Applying Visual Basic to produce a Monte Carlo Analysis The session will focus on building a simple Monte Carlo analysis routine in Visual Basic to quickly evaluate the outcome of 10,000 scenarios. Techniques for applying statistical principles to interpret the data will be shown. The session will go on to look at how to handle assumption ranges with normal and skewed distribution expectations.
Dependency Ranking The principles will be shown of how to rank all the assumptions in an investment opportunity in the order of their criticality to the final outcome. A short Visual Basic routine will be used to build a dependency ranking table and present the findings in the form of a Tornado graph.
Further Visual Basic Examples Routines will be demonstrated to show how to automatically index a model, build an input check list, generate print routines and automate common development stages.
Surgery Common problems encountered by participants in completing Visual Basic and building models, a sharing of experiences amongst the group.
End Course review and close

What is a virtual classroom?

A virtual classroom provides the same great learning experience as other ICAEW training, except one difference, you can learn from your desk.

Being delivered online makes it so much easier to access in a busy working week and would definitively recommend this type of training. The breakout rooms work really well to allow you to get to know the other participants and share experiences.

Virtual classroom delegate

The focus is on the learner and creating an enriching classroom experience that connects participants globally. Using video, learners can converse and interact with the trainer and other learners in real-time. Whiteboards, break-out sessions, polls, screen-sharing, and interactive Q&A create an immersive learning experience.

I think the virtual training format using Zoom, and the survey features, and break out rooms, really works great. I had no problems engaging with the facilitator and felt he listened to what we said, and kept the pace of the content moving steadily.
