Event information

Public sector reporting is a vital tool in allowing the public and Parliament to understand how taxpayers' money has been spent, what an organisation's strategy is and what the key risks they face are. Crucially, it should also explain what public sector organisations have achieved throughout the financial year.

Ensuring good practice in public sector financial reporting has therefore arguably never been more important. The public sector has faced a magnitude of challenges over recent years and is likely to continue to face financial pressures over the coming few. Transparent, timely and good quality financial reporting is key to ensure public bodies are held to account by the public and Parliament alike.

This webinar looks to showcase examples of best practice reporting across the public sector and explore good practice principles for annual reporting. Attendees will hear from Dan Chan, Partner at PwC, with vast experience in working with charities, and Steven Corbishley, Director at the National Audit Office who leads the NAO's audit quality unit.

Key benefits

  • Learn from industry experts as to what best practice reporting in the public sector looks like.
  • Explore the key good practice principles for annual reporting in the public sector.
  • Understand why good public sector financial reporting is so important.

About the speakers

Henning Diederichs, Senior Technical Manager, Public Sector Financial Reporting, ICAEW
Henning is a chartered accountant with over 13 years’ experience of both private and public sector working in financial and non-financial reporting. Henning is the Technical Advisor to the UK Board member on International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (IPSASB) which is now starting to be active in sustainability reporting. Many frameworks have their origin in the private sector and it is crucial to critically evaluate these for the public sector to ensure they support the wider public interest. We are facing systemic risks by operating above our planetary limits and it is the ultimate public interest to ensure climate, biodiversity and social justice sit at the heart of government activity. That activity needs to be adequately reported to measure progress and to hold those responsible to account.

Steven Corbishley, Director, National Audit Office
Steven is a Director at the National Audit Office where he has worked for over 30 years. In that time, he has audited a wider range of central government bodies and departments, including the Home Office, HM Treasury, DWP, HMRC, Health, Education, and Justice. He is a Fellow at both the ICAEW and CIPFA and has held a number of non-executive roles in the NHS. His current role is as Head of the NAO’s Quality Unit. As part of this, he leads a small team of NAO colleagues in producing an annual guide on good practice in annual reporting.

Daniel Chan, Partner, PwC
Dan is a Partner at PwC UK, leading the firm's audit work work and relationships for charities, higher education institutions an the public sector nationally. He is a member of PwC's Government and Health Industries leadership team. He also leads the firm's thought leadership for the charity sector as well as the Charities Award and Public Sector Award (in association with the National Audit Office) as part of the PwC Building Public Trust Awards.
