Charity accounts and accounting: key things to know

Our spring 2025 Essentials charity webinar will highlight the key components of charity accounts, focusing on those features which differ from a set of ‘commercial’ accounts. We’ll look at the role of the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) and the aspects of charity accounting which are fundamental to know. We’ll focus on the SORP which is currently applicable (2nd edition, published on October 2019) although we’ll signpost to areas which are likely to change when the revised Charities SORP is published later in 2025 (effective from 1 January 2026).

We’ll look at the requirements for, and role of, the Trustees’ Report, and the crucial role that Trustees play in the governance of the charity. The material will be set in the context of the key things that delegates should know about the UK charity regulatory framework, especially in relation to reporting and scrutiny requirements, and the role of the UK charity regulators. We’ll refer to the revised Charity Governance Code which we expect will have been published by the date of the webinar

There will be opportunities for participants to submit questions for Sally to address during the webinar, and as part of the live Q&A session at the end.

Suitable for:

  • Finance professionals and volunteers who are new to the charity sector - whether working in the capacity of charity staff member or as a Trustee / Treasurer.
  • Charity practitioners who would like a reminder of ‘key things to know’, especially in relation to requirements for smaller charities.

CPD hours: ICAEW's revised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Regulations bring in new CPD requirements. This includes a minimum number of hours and an ethics requirement. Attending this webinar could contribute up to 2 hours 10 minutes of verifiable CPD, providing you can demonstrate that the content is relevant to your role. A copy of the webinar booking confirmation email is accepted as evidence of verifiable CPD. You will need to save the email as a JPEG or PDF before uploading it to your record. Click here to use ICAEW’s self-assessment tool to help you work out how much CPD you will need to fulfil each year.
