Event information

Join us for an insightful event where you will gain a deeper understanding of the UK economy in 2025, with a specific focus on the Midlands region.

We will start with a briefing on the latest findings from the quarterly ICAEW Business Confidence Monitor (BCM). The BCM gives an indication of the overall direction of the economy and provides valuable insights into how a rapidly changing economic landscape is affecting businesses in the Midlands and the rest of the UK.

Following the BCM briefing, a budget overview and fireside chat will take place with Thomas Pugh, Partner and UK Economist for RSM UK. Thomas will be joined by members working within the construction, manufacturing, and retail industries. They will share their perspectives on the impact of the budget on their respective sectors, including challenges and opportunities anticipated over the coming year.

About the speakers

Justin Kyriakou | Regional Director for the Midlands | ICAEW

Thomas Pugh | Partner and UK economist | RSM UK

Partner and UK economist from RSM UK, with a wealth of experience in analysing the key economic events in the UK and around the world. He provides insightful and accessible commentary on how these events affect businesses in the real economy in the UK. He works closely with RSM Chief Economist, Joe Brusuelas, to give a comprehensive overview of the economic issues that middle market business leaders need to be aware of.

Thomas started his career in economics at HM Treasury, where he worked on developing new banking regulations during the financial crisis to make the financial system more robust. He also worked on the economic situation of UK households and how they were affected by the crisis.

He then moved to Capital Economics, where he specialised in analysing trends in the demand and supply of energy commodities and developing price forecasts. He also covered other aspects of the global economy, such as inflation, trade and monetary policy.

He also assessed the impact of Brexit and the pandemic on various sectors and regions in the UK, as well as on consumer spending, investment and public finances.

Thomas is regularly quoted and interviewed by the UK’s financial media, such as the BBC and the Financial Times, and frequently presents his thoughts and insights on the UK economy to businesses and conferences around the country and internationally.
