Event information

From member feedback, we were asked for a webinar on alternative roles for accountants so here we go!

In this webinar our speakers will share how they diversified out of traditional accounting roles into areas they are passionate about. Expect to hear how becoming a coach has turbo charged an FDs career.  Why so many members become charity trustees and the benefits this will add to your career. We will hear how wanting to inspire both youngsters and established entrepreneurs has led to the chair of our event becoming a podcaster and a volunteer workshop presenter. Completing the panel is a member whose portfolio career combines FD roles, being an entrepreneur, introducing Skateboarding to the Tokyo Olympics, and the mission to propel Exeter City AFC to dizzy heights of success in league football.

Take inspiration from our speakers to expand your portfolio career into areas that will not only develop your skills but will also align with your values and define your personal brand.

Expect to hear about:

  • Popular and some more unusual alternative roles for accountants.
  • The importance of taking creative risks and exploring your entrepreneurial self.
  • How identifying and following your passions can deliver more than just job satisfaction.

Key benefits

  1. Consider how you can combine your own passions and interests with your career.
  2. Hear real life experiences from members who are at different stages of their portfolio careers.
  3. Open your mind to the variety of roles available.
  4. Get a better understanding of how a portfolio career can give you the work-life balance you crave.

About the speakers

Romesh Jeyaseelanayagam, Portfolio FD, FD Consultant
I trained and qualified as an accountant many years ago with EY and then moved on to join Bunzl plc, a FTSE 100 organisation where I gained experience in various senior finance roles. I then pivoted my career to the world of start ups, scale ups and SME's, and have been a full time CFO or FD of some successful growth businesses. One business, a pioneering eco friendly consumables supplier, increased its revenues by 9 times during my time there. A second business, in student accommodation, grew from 4 employees managing 20 properties to over 600 properties managed by 50 employees in 25 cities across the UK. 5 years ago, I set up The FD Consultant (a collective of part time/fractional CFO Consultants) because I am truly passionate about helping businesses achieve their full potential.

Alan Evans, Coach, Alan Evans Coaching
Alan set up his coaching business in 2018 after successful careers in education (6 years) and in UK retail (20 years). Having led many large and diverse teams, including as Finance Director of a FTSE 250 organisation, Alan is well qualified to help other leaders and aspiring leaders to reach the next level, and then the level after that.  Alongside his coaching business, Alan also provides management consultancy to retail and FMCG businesses. In his spare time Alan is a NED at a community bank and volunteers with Samaritans.

Harriet G Raine, Charity Trustee and Not-for-Profit Technical Manager, Grant Thornton UK LLP
Harriet is an enthusiastic supporter of accountants expanding their skills and networks through taking on voluntary trustee roles. She is treasurer trustee for a domestic abuse charity in Yorkshire, and a committee member for her local branch of the Military Wives’ Choir. Harriet specialises in the Not-for-Profit sector, with technical experience across the housing, education and charity sectors.

Clive Bawden, Portfolio FD
Clive is a Portfolio FD, an award-winning NED, a TechNation Rising star with Governance360 a software company he founded to reduce the admin burden in Boards. He has just stepped down from a role as a non-executive director of the new national governing body for Skateboarding in Great Britain. He is a Charity Trustee at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and is a non-executive Director at his home town football club, Exeter City AFC, whose mission it is to be the most sustainable, successful, football in league football.
