About the speaker

Michael Izza CBE

Upon graduation in 1983, Michael trained as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand in Manchester (now PwC). He joined Canadian brewing company John Labatt Ltd. in 1989, becoming European Vice President Finance, progressing to Managing Director of the firm's European retail arm in 1992.

In 1997, Michael joined Spring Group Plc - as Managing Director of Spring Skills - then the UK's largest vocational training business and progressed to group roles including Finance Director.

He joined ICAEW in 2002 as Executive Director of Finance and Operations, becoming COO in 2004 and Chief Executive in 2006. Michael's leadership has seen ICAEW embrace a vision of 'a World of Sustainable Economies', transforming itself into a professional accountancy body with a truly global identity and reach.

In this role, Michael regularly met ministers, policy-makers and regulators around the world, and was a frequent media commentator on economic and business issues. He believes that the emerging forces which are already changing the very nature of work - such as technological disruption - present ICAEW Chartered Accountants with many more opportunities than threats.

He is passionate about sustainability and is confident that the accountancy profession has a critical role to play in this. He believes we need to build the knowledge and skills to enable Chartered Accountants to prepare and assure non-financial reports, and to support leadership in creating effective strategies and transition plans.

Additionally, he is a former member of the British government's Small Business Economic Forum and also chaired Chartered Accountants Worldwide (CAW).As well as this, he was Executive Director of the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies and a board member of the Global Accounting Alliance.

Michael is a member of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, one of the livery companies of the City of London. He has served as a school governor for eleven years and is a trustee of several charities, including Moorfields Eye Charity, supporting London's world-class Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Recently, Michael has become a strategic adviser to Inflo, a digital audit platform for accounting professionals.
