Step back in time and explore the heart of Dundee's industrial past with fellow retired members and guests.
 
Join us for a unique and engaging visit to the award-winning Verdant Works Museum, a beautifully refurbished Victorian mill that vividly brings to life the stories of Dundee's jute industry. This is a perfect opportunity to learn more about the city's rich social history, connect with peers, and enjoy a relaxed group lunch.
 
What to expect:
  • Self-guided museum tour | Explore the atmospheric Verdant Works at your own pace.
    • Journey through the bustling jute office and meet historical characters.
    • Experience the sounds of the working machinery.
    • Witness the entire jute process, from raw fibre to woven cloth.
    • Gain insights into tenement life and the health challenges faced by mill workers.
  • Group lunch | Following the tour, enjoy a sandwich lunch with coffee/tea in the Weavers Room, providing a perfect setting for conversation and connection.
  • Insights from Dundee Heritage | Hear from Emma Halford-Forbes, Heritage Director, and fellow ICAEW member Jenny Minhinnick, Head of Finance and Admin at Dundee Heritage. They will share fascinating insights into the history, unique challenges and operations of running a museum and heritage centre in today's economic climate.
  • Connect with fellow retired members: This event is a chance to catch up and connect with fellow retired ICAEW members and their guests. ICAEW Scotland retired member representative, David Dow, and members of the ICAEW Scotland staff team will be there to meet you.

Dating back to 1833, the Verdant Works is a world-class visitor attraction that tells the compelling story of Dundee’s industrial textile heritage, an industry that once employed 50,000 people at its peak.

About the speakers

David Dow

David is the active member volunteer link between retired members in Scotland and the ICAEW Scotland Network Board. He trained in London with Thomson McLintock before working for Cambridge University then joining KPMG (Edinburgh) as a public sector specialist. Latterly David worked for the Scottish Government first as Chief Accountant then as financial advisor on transport-related matters.

Parking

A large car park is available behind Verdant Works Museum, on Miln Street, with a number of disabled spaces. It is free for visitors. Visitors must register their car on arrival to Verdant Works Museum to qualify for free parking.

Access

There is a lift to the first floor Social History gallery. This lift also provides access to the conference rooms and High Mill balconies.
