Event Information

ICAEW North East, in collaboration with Durham University, is pleased to announce a special event on data analytics and visualisation in accounting. This seminar brings together academics and professionals to explore how data is transforming the accounting profession.

Professor Amir Michael

Professor Amir Michael is a Professor of Accounting and Head of Accounting Department at Durham University Business School, Durham University, UK whose research and teaching interests have been fostered by several years of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and mentoring. Amir was the former Associate Dean for MBA/DBA and the Director of the Durham MBA (Full Time) programme.

Professor Michael is the director of the Durham Rutgers Accounting Analytics Network (DRAAN). His research interest and expertise is in the area of auditing and reporting using data analytics and artificial intelligence in improving audit and reporting quality and transparency. He is also interested in accounting education digital and technology adoption research.

Amir has been instrumental in the development the BSc in Accounting (KPMG/ICAEW) School Leavers Programme. This innovative programme has been mentioned in the House of Commons and cited in the government education White paper as an example of good practice in higher education and the highly influential Wilson “Review of Business–University Collaboration” report to Government.

Amir’s teaching philosophy reflects his interests in collaborative authorship, preferring student-centred teaching that encourages learning by students and teachers rather than traditional teaching. Amir is interested in sharing his research with students which facilitates applying the research-led-education approach that is a cornerstone of Durham University.

 

Dr Terry Harris

Terry is an Associate Professor in Accounting at Durham University Business School, Durham University, UK. He received his Bachelors Degree (double major) in Computer Science and Accounting from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus in 2009. Since that time, Terry has successfully completed a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Computer Science, a professional accounting designation with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Finance with Durham University.

Terry has taught extensively in Accounting and Finance and has incorporated many active learning strategies into his teaching. All told, Terry’s teaching has been of a high standard as evidenced by his excellent teaching evaluation scores, which average above 4 on a rating scale of 1 - 5.

Terry has engaged in theoretical and applied research, publications, and scholarly and professional activities. In particular, he has published in Association of Business Schools (ABS) rated internationally leading journals. Furthermore, he has presented papers at international conferences and has reviewed for top tier academic journals. Terry is also a Chartered Accountant and member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados (ICAB).
