This virtual roundtable is a session designed to support young professionals who are navigating the early stages of their careers during a time of constant change and challenge. Led by senior business leader Karen Shaw, the discussion will explore how to build resilience, make decisions under pressure, and find opportunities in adversity. Participants will have the chance to share concerns, ask questions, and learn about support resources from ICAEW and caba.

This virtual roundtable is designed to support young professionals who are navigating the early stages of their careers during a time of constant change, uncertainty, and challenge. The session will explore how professionals can build resilience, adapt to adversity, and even prosper during difficult times.

Hear from senior business leader Karen Shaw, Group Financial Controller at Johnstone’s of Elgin, who has navigated change and challenge in her professional career. Karen will be in conversation with David Bond, ICAEW Scotland Director.

Key themes to be explored:

  • Resilience | What does it look like in practice, and how can you build it?

  • Decision-making under pressure | How to handle difficult choices and uncertainty.

  • Career navigation | How to stay motivated and find opportunity in adversity.

About the speakers

David Bond | Director | ICAEW Scotland

As director in Scotland, David is responsible for developing strategy, leading member support and engaging with a range of stakeholders. David is also Founder / Director of McGregor Bond, executive search, and an Associate with TRANSEARCH International, one of the top ten global executive search firms. He is an ICAEW Chartered Accountant and qualified with KPMG.


Karen Shaw | Group Financial Controller | Johnston’s of Elgin

LLB (Hons) in Scots Law (graduated 2004), ICAEW FCA (qualified 2007) and CIOT CTA (qualified 2019)

Executive MBA from the University of Strathclyde (graduated 2025)

Trained at the National Audit Office in London, then spent 10 years in practice with EY and Saffery

Responsible for running the finance team at Johnstons, a £96m turnover family run business with 2 Scottish mills supplying Burberry, Hermes and our own brand of cashmere and wool garments and accessories

In my spare time I am a Mountain Leader and lead World Challenge expeditions for schools abroad (last summer Borneo) and work with our local Scout group and schools on Duke of Edinburgh expeditions
