About the speakers

James Wallis, CFO and Angel Investor
James is an FCA and member of the ICAEW South Central Board. He heads up Aben Financial which is a specialist debt advisor and introducer focused on helping property developers, investors and property backed lenders access funding from banks, specialist funds, family offices and institutional providers for loans in excess of £25m. James also volunteers for the Cranfield Trust which is the leading provider of pro bono consultancy and management support for charities in the UK.

Ros Rowe, Subject Matter Expert, ICAEW Construction & Real Estate Community
Ros is a chartered accountant and a Non-Executive Director of a housing association. Formerly a Tax Partner at PwC, she has advised construction companies on complex projects including regeneration (King’s Cross and London’s Docklands), PPP/PFI joint ventures for student accommodation, and mixed-use developments. As an adviser to many real estate investment trusts, she worked closely with the government to increase the supply of housing by initiating a framework of tax incentives to regenerate brownfield sites.

Lee Merrifield, Credit and Underwriting Director, MSP Capital
Lee is a qualified Chartered Banker who spent twenty eight years at NatWest, prior to joining the team at MSP Capital. During his time in banking, Lee worked extensively with real estate clients of the bank across Hampshire & Dorset, both in residential and commercial property sectors. His role progressed from covering funding and support to risk assessment and credit control elements of lending. Since joining MSP Capital - a specialist bridging and development finance provider based in Poole, Dorset - in October 2017, Lee has applied his extensive lending experience to optimise decisions on funding solutions, whilst carefully managing the firm’s credit appetite.

Brian Burt, Head of Development Finance - Midlands and North West, Homes England
Brian has been with Homes England for nine years. He leads a successful team of experienced and passionate property professionals who support SME housebuilders to grow sustainably, by providing bespoke debt funding solutions across a range of tenures. Prior to joining Homes England, Brian held leadership roles within several mainstream banks, where he led teams focused on serving SME clients in the Real Estate sector.
