This course shows you how to use Power Pivot and Power BI to transform the way you analyse and present business information. You’ll learn how to go beyond the limitations of PivotTables, build bespoke calculations and dashboards, and import data from multiple sources to deliver powerful insights in minutes rather than weeks.

Through hands-on case studies and practical exercises, you’ll design rich, interactive reports and dashboards from scratch. You’ll leave confident in your ability to turn raw data into clear business intelligence that informs decisions and shapes strategy.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Improve your ability to manipulate Tables and PivotTables in Excel.
  • Understand how Power Pivot extends Excel with advanced tools like Slicers and multiple criteria functions.
  • Import and relate data from different electronic sources to generate insights quickly.
  • Write formulae in Power Pivot’s Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) language.
  • Convert your Excel knowledge into automated dashboards using Power BI.

Session 1 – Introduction to Power Pivot

  • Limitations of PivotTables and the benefits of Power Pivot.
  • Key concepts: tables vs. databases, columns vs. fields, calculated columns vs. measures.
  • Creating simple measures for complex analysis.
  • Case study application.

Session 2 – Power Pivot Meets Power BI

  • Linking tables in Power Pivot.
  • Creating and using a calendar table for time series analysis.
  • Importing Power Pivot into Power BI.
  • Data visualisation techniques and AI-generated narratives.
  • Security considerations including row-level security.

 

Dr Liam Bastick FCA FCMA CGMA MVPin
Liam has over 30 years’ experience in financial model development / auditing, Power BI, valuations, M&A, strategy, project finance, training and consultancy. He has considerable experience in many different sectors and as a management consultant, he has provided strategic advisory assistance to many well-known companies about KPI creation and performance measurement/monitoring. A Fellow of three accounting institutes, he is a regular contributor to various accounting institutes with a circulated readership of c.7 million each month. He is also author of An Introduction to Financial Modelling, Continuing Financial Modelling and Financial Modelling in Power BI, amongst other texts, and is also the co-author and lead editor of Excel Insights: A Microsoft MVP Guide to the Best of Excel and the Power BI MVP Book. Upcoming books include Financial Modelling for Project Finance, Financial Modelling with Dynamic Arrays, An Introduction to AI in Finance & Accounting and Financial Modelling using AI.

How are the courses delivered?

All Virtual Classrooms are run by live on Zoom. These are interactive and not recorded, interaction and delegate involvement is encouraged.

When will I receive joining instructions?

You will receive a email with joining instructions after enrolling. Materials and any other resources for the course will be sent to you shortly before the course start date.

Are there breaks?

Yes, no fixed timings - will depend on the length of the course.

How do I access the course slide deck?

Depending on the course you will either be sent in the lead up to the course or after.

What if I miss the live date?

The Virtual Classrooms are not recorded so we recommend you attend all sessions.

What if I am going to be 15 minutes late?

This is not a problem, the classroom starts at the start time, but you will be let in if you are delayed for any reason. Trainers do their best to accommodate catch-up, but this is not guaranteed. Where possible please let us know of any delays so we are aware when doing role call the beginning of the session.

Can I have my colleague with me in the live course?

Yes, if you purchase a second place. Each booking is valid for one person only.

Can I record the training?

No, virtual classrooms are not recorded.
