CPD HOURS
ICAEW's revised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Regulations bring in new CPD requirements. This includes a minimum number of hours and an ethics requirement. Attending this course could contribute up to 40hrs of verifiable CPD, providing you can demonstrate that the content is relevant to your role.

This self-paced online programme provides a comprehensive learning pathway to help you prepare for the FMI Advanced Financial Modeler (AFM) accreditation exam.

You will work through structured modules covering the full lifecycle of best-practice financial model design, build, and review, supported by exercises, case examples, and exam-style practice tasks.

Core elements covered include:
• Model Design and Structure – establishing a clear layout, modular design, and documentation discipline.
• Forecasting and Assumptions – building revenue, cost, depreciation, working capital, tax, and capex schedules.
• Financial Integration – linking the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow into a dynamic three-statement model.
• Scenario and Sensitivity Analysis – creating flexible models that respond to different business conditions.
• Capital Structure and Financing – incorporating debt, equity, and funding considerations.
• Outputs and Presentation – designing a professional front end with executive summaries and visual outputs.
• Model Review and Testing – applying model audit principles, reconciliation, error-checking, and stress testing.

 

 

Ian Schnoor, Executive Director, Financial Modelling Institute
Ian Schnoor is the Executive Director of the Financial Modeling Institute (FMI), the world’s only financial modelling accreditation body.

Ian is also the founder of The Marquee Group, a leading provider of financial modelling training and consulting to professionals in the financial community. Over the years, Ian has taught thousands of business professionals and university students in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. Ian is passionate about teaching and brings a hands-on, interactive approach to every session.

Ian teaches a course called Advanced Financial Modeling at Queen’s University and is a past recipient of the Professor of the Year award in the Master of Finance program at the Smith School of Business.

Ian began his career in the Investment Banking departments at Citigroup and BMO Capital Markets. Ian completed a Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree with academic distinction and is also a CFA charterholder.

How do I complete the accreditation?

Once you have booked via the ICAEW website, you will receive instructions on how to enrol in the AFM accreditation program and register for an online exam. You will then have access to FMI’s learning resources to prepare for the accreditation exam. Finally, you will sit an online exam in which you will be provided with a case study and required to build a 3-statement model of a company from scratch. If you successfully complete the proctored exam in under 4 hours, you will complete the accreditation.

How do I register for the exam?

Once you have booked your place via the ICAEW website, you will receive an automated confirmation email with instructions on the next steps.

What do I get access to?

As an AFM candidate, you will gain access to FMI’s learning resources to prepare for your online exam. The learning resources include:

  • 12-hours of step-by-step video tutorials on how to build a 3-statement financial model.
  • AFM practice exams.
  • A live Q&A exam prep session.
  • Access to the FMI Community which includes networking opportunities and webinars hosted by industry.

Instructions on how to access the FMI platform are included in the booking confirmation email you will receive from ICAEW.

How long do I need to prepare for the exam?

Accounting professionals typically spend 25- 40 hours to prepare for the online AFM exam.

When are the exams?

Exams are proctored and offered online four times a year. Once you have booked via the ICAEW website, you will receive a confirmation email containing instructions on how to enrol with FMI and select an exam date.

Will there be any virtual classroom sessions for this accreditation?

No, there are no virtual classrooms included with this accreditation. All learning resources to prepare for the online exam are provided on FMI’s platform.

Can I change the exam date at a later date?

Yes, you are able to change your exam date. Candidates have 12 months of access included in their registration which means you can write during any of the public exam dates within those 12 months. We just ask that if you need to reschedule, please do so prior to 48 hours before the scheduled exam date by contacting FMI. After this deadline candidates will incur a re-enrolment fee if they need to defer their exam.

Is there a cost to resit the exam should I need to retake?

If a candidate does not pass the AFM exam they are welcome to register for a re-enrolment at a reduced rate of USD $300.

How is the online exam invigilated?

The AFM exam is proctored by Proctorio, a remote proctoring software. This software can easily be installed before the exam as a browser extension. All candidates will have the opportunity to test out the Proctorio extension before their scheduled Exam Day to ensure their system setup meets the necessary requirements of the FMI's Exam Platform.
