WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?
External assurance of sustainability information is expanding rapidly, and expectations of preparers are rising. Many organisations face delays, inefficiencies, or rework because assurance scope, criteria, and evidence are unclear or undocumented. Finance teams play a pivotal role in ensuring sustainability information is reliable, traceable, and ready for scrutiny.

This course provides a practical, finance-led approach to preparing for sustainability assurance - helping you define scope and criteria, assemble evidence, document controls, and collaborate effectively with Internal Audit and external assurers.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Explain the key concepts of sustainability reporting and assurance, and Finance’s role in producing reliable information.
• Distinguish between limited and reasonable assurance and understand how frameworks such as ISAE 3000 and ISSA 5000 shape what preparers should have in place.
• Define and document the scope and criteria for sustainability information clearly and proportionately.
• Plan and prepare for assurance by establishing roles, documentation, and practical readiness steps.
• Describe what good looks like for evidence, data lineage, proportionate controls, and review or approval points.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

Primary audience: CFOs, Finance Directors, Financial Controllers, Group Reporting and Consolidation Leads, Heads of Sustainability, and Risk/Internal Audit managers responsible for preparing, reviewing, or signing off sustainability information subject to assurance.

Also suitable for: Finance operations and data owners (e.g. procurement, AP or facilities leads) who provide source data and evidence for disclosures.

Not the focus: External auditors or those seeking a detailed, standard-by-standard technical walkthrough.

This interactive 3-hour live virtual classroom blends expert insight, peer discussion, and practical exercises to help finance and sustainability teams prepare confidently for assurance.

Access to online learning:
All attendees will receive access to the relevant ICAEW e-learning modules upon enrolment, allowing you to familiarise yourself with key concepts and frameworks before the live session.

Session breakdown:
• Setting the scene – what sustainability assurance is, why it matters, and what “good” looks like from a preparer’s perspective (limited vs reasonable in plain terms).
• Who does what – roles and collaboration across Finance, Sustainability, Internal Audit, and external assurers during planning, preparation, and reporting.
• Scoping and basis of reporting – how to define and document what’s in scope, the criteria used, and the rationale behind them.
• Evidence and documentation – what’s expected for traceability, approvals, and confidence in sustainability information.
• Controls and review points – applying proportionate checks, sign-offs, and documentation to prevent rework and support assurance.
• Working through requests and findings – typical queries from Internal Audit or external assurers, how to respond efficiently, and how to capture agreed actions.
• Wrap-up and next steps – key takeaways and immediate actions to strengthen assurance readiness, plus signposts to standards-specific ICAEW training where needed.
