The Autumn Budget introduced significant changes to pensions and Inheritance Tax (IHT), marking a shift in how pension wealth will be assessed on death from April 2027. Unused pension funds and certain death benefits will now be included within an individual’s estate for IHT purposes, potentially increasing the tax burden on beneficiaries. For accountants, this creates a need to review clients’ estate and retirement plans, ensuring pension strategies remain tax-efficient and compliant with the new rules.

Neil Macleod is a Senior Technical Manager in M&G’s technical team who specialises in tax, trusts and pensions. Neil has worked in financial services for over 20 years in various advice and support roles.
