About the speakers

Mauricio Armellini | Agent for North East | Bank of England

Mauricio has been a member of the Government Economic Service since 2008, when he joined the Department for Work and Pensions to lead teams of analysts in areas of key Ministerial attention such as skills and pensions.

In 2013 he went on secondment to the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, where he worked as Chief Economist until his appointment as Bank of England’s Agent for the North East in September 2014.

Mauricio came to the North East in 2005 to undertake his PhD studies in economics at Durham University, following his MA in Development Economics at Williams College (USA). He also taught economics at undergraduate and postgraduate level at Durham University.

Before leaving his native Uruguay in 2004, he worked as a professional economist in the financial and non-for-profit sectors.

Gareth Harrison | Deputy Agent for North East | Bank of England

Gareth is our Deputy Agent in the North East.

He acts as our ‘eyes and ears’ in the region. His job is to meet people from companies of all sizes, and from all sectors, to understand the business conditions they face. He feeds this intelligence back to our policymakers who use it to inform our policy decisions on things like what Bank Rate we set.

Before he joined Bank of England, Gareth worked for the manufacturing trade body EEF. Previously, he worked as a recruitment specialist.

He has a degree in Business and Economics and a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resources Management.

Gareth has a largely unfulfilling lifelong obsession with Newcastle United and a love of travel and cookery.

Simon Gray | Head of business | ICAEW

Simon is an ICAEW Chartered Accountant and ICAEW member who qualified with KPMG in Nottingham. After many years of volunteering, including District Society President, Chair of the Business Committee and Council Member, he joined ICAEW as Head of Business in December 2021. His background is in the recruitment, careers, membership and inward investment sectors. Simon has started and run his own businesses and served as a Non-Executive Director.
