Event information

The idea of “trustworthy AI” has become central to global AI governance, appearing in major policies and regulations across the United States, China and other jurisdictions. Yet the meaning of “trust” in “trust in AI”, and “trustworthiness” in “trustworthy AI”, remains contested and interpreted differently across contexts. In this session, Professor Pak-Hang Wong, PhD (Twente), Assistant Professor at Hong Kong Baptist University and Research Fellow at the Centre for Applied Ethics, presents a specific understanding of trust and trustworthiness in relation to AI through the concept of a trustworthy socio-technical assemblage.

Professor Pak-Hang Wong will discuss how this understanding clarifies the opportunities and challenges inherent in achieving “trustworthy AI”, drawing on his expertise in the social, ethical and political dimensions of emerging technologies.

Key takeaways

  • Clarify the meaning of trust in AI.
Understand how trust and trustworthiness can be interpreted within AI systems and why definitions vary across contexts.

  • Explore socio-technical trustworthiness.
Learn how the concept of a trustworthy socio-technical assemblage frames the relationship between technology, institutions and users.

  • Identify opportunities and challenges for trustworthy AI.
Consider what is required to achieve trustworthy AI in practice, including structural, ethical and governance considerations.

This is the third webinar in the ICAEW Ethics Webinar Series, jointly hosted by the ICAEW Hong Kong office and Hong Kong Baptist University.
