Event information

The latest AI tools have a particularly strong impact on younger generations who adopt new technologies at a rapid pace. Families, schools and workplaces often struggle to keep up, with some attempting to regulate or ban new uses and others attempting to adapt as quickly as possible. In this session, Professor Rachel Siow Robertson, PhD (Cantab), Assistant Professor and Research Fellow at Hong Kong Baptist University, examines how interactions with AI shape new ways of working and relating, using the framework of the “tragic dilemma”. This framework highlights situations in which individuals must engage with AI without the possibility of choosing an all‑things‑considered right action.

Professor Rachel Siow Robertson will explore how thinking in these terms can refine common recommendations for digital ethics. Her approach introduces sensitivity to differing responsibilities in relation to AI and emphasises the importance of structures that help people work with integrity while navigating rapid technological change.

Key takeaways

  • Understand the tragic dilemma in digital ethics.
Learn how the tragic dilemma framework explains situations where users must interact with AI even when no perfect choice exists.

  • Analyse how AI shapes behaviour and relationships.
Explore how AI influences communication, decision‑making and working patterns among younger generations.

  • Refine digital ethics recommendations.
See how considering differing responsibilities and structural support leads to more realistic and effective ethical guidance.

This is the fifth webinar in the ICAEW Ethics Webinar Series, jointly hosted by the ICAEW Hong Kong office and Hong Kong Baptist University.
