Description

The UK tax system is currently undergoing a major shift that goes beyond specific legislation to the purpose of HMRC and to HMRC’s view of taxpayers and tax advisor intentions towards the UK tax system. This shift has had a direct, practical impact on several points of the tax lifecycle: from getting clarity on a tax position, to filing a tax return, to handling a tax enquiry if it arises and agreeing the appropriate level of penalty.

Event information

In this webinar, we will look at these changes collectively and discuss HMRC's current approach to investigating the accuracy of tax returns and the impact of recent initiatives, including the introduction of Guidelines for Compliance 13 and the proposed extension of the notification of uncertain tax treatments regime to high net worth individuals. We will explore best practice for disclosures in tax returns and the provision of supporting information to HMRC.

This webinar will be of particular interest to tax practitioners, whether in-house or in advisory firms, who regularly submit returns that include complex issues or who are the first point of contact with HMRC in its compliance activity responding to those returns.

Annis Lampard, Partner, Deloitte
Annis is the chair of the ICAEW compliance & investigations committee. She has 20 years’ experience, both in HMRC and private practice, of resolving tax investigations with a specialism on advising both UK and international wealthy families about their personal tax enquiries and those affecting their businesses and their trusts, up to and including civil fraud disclosures. In her ICAEW role, she regularly contributes to HMRC consultations on behalf of the ICAEW membership and she recently spoke on the ICAEW Tax Track podcast about the practical impacts on taxpayers and their advisors of the recent shifts in HMRC.

Derek Scott, Partner, KPMG
Derek leads KPMG's Tax Investigation team in the UK which provides advice to individuals and companies subject to all types of HMRC enquiries and investigations.

Derek specialises in advising clients who require to make a voluntary disclosure to HMRC with tax issues to resolve in connection with overseas assets and those who are subject to a serious fraud investigation (Code of Practice 9).

Derek is a regular speaker at events both in the UK and overseas on investigation, disclosure and transparency issues.

Jessica McLellan, Partner, Tax Risk & Dispute Resolution, BKL
