The conference was designed to help members in practice identify the threats and exploit the opportunities the new ways of working will bring ICAEW CEO, Michael Izza, delivered the introduction and outlined his views on the opportunities the new ways of working will bring, along with ICAEW’s commitment to support you through this period of change. There was an overview of digital accounting from Matt Flanagan, advice from Anita Monteith on Making Tax Digital as well as Mark Lee providing guidance of practical development. Derek Blair shared his experiences and gave his views on examples of practical changes that small firms should be considering.

Andrew looks after a diverse portfolio of clients ranging from UK based owner-managed businesses (OMBs) to significant pan-European groups. He specialises in corporate finance work and working with entrepreneurial companies that are looking for strong commercial advice and support.
Michael Izza became CEO of ICAEW in 2006. Since then the organisation has grown significantly and now has over 147,000 members and offices in Europe, China the Middle East and SE Asia. Michael regularly speaks on issues facing practice, the profession and business and engages with media, politicians and regulators. Before joining ICAEW Michael held a number of positions in the private sector including running the largest vocational training business in the UK. He qualified as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand, having graduated in law from Durham University where he was President of the Union.
Matt Flanagan is a cloud business system specialist at BlueHub, working in close partnership with forward thinking accountants to support their transition to cloud accounting and developing relevant advisory services. He assists firms with their cloud journey using the seven-step framework to convert from desktop/manual ways of working to adopting and using cloud-based best practices.
Anita is ICAEW’s Tax Technical lead and senior policy adviser and has a particular interest in tax matters affecting small and medium-sized businesses. She is closely involved with online filing developments in tax and is leading for ICAEW on the government’s proposals to Make Tax Digital.
Derek is a partner in Pinkham Blair, a two-partner general practice based in Hemel Hempstead. Over the last four years, Pinkham Blair has been attempting to transform itself into a more forward-looking, change-embracing business, using cloud-based accounting packages and delivering virtual-FD-style business planning consultancy to local SMEs. That project is (and probably always will be) a work in progress.
Mark originally qualified in general practice and later became a partner at CCW and then BDO. When not speaking at conferences, seminars and away days for accountants he loves working with sole practitioners to help them secure more success and reward for their time and effort. He is a frequent blogger at bookmarklee.co.uk and writes for various accounting journals and websites. He has written over 200 practice focused articles for AccountingWeb, which have been viewed over one million times.
