Budgeting in a volatile business environment

Does your system support your budgeting or does it lead and control it? What happens when critical factors change such as labour costs, interest rates and exchange rates suddenly change during the delivery period? How does your budget stand up to reality?

This course identifies and addresses the issues and challenges facing management accountants in constructing, implementing and managing the budgeting and planning process against the backdrop of a volatile business environment. You will also be asked to think critically about your existing budgeting processes and how you can improve these.

We will examine techniques to help create meaningful and adaptable budgets and to ensure that your budgeting processes can cope when the business environment shifts.

• The strategic role of budgeting in the context of the business planning process
• Budgeting for flexibility: Zero Based, Kaizen, Activity-Based, Fixed, Flexible and Flexed
• Setting Aggregate & Relative Targets: internal and external Benchmarking
• Focusing on relevant value drivers
• Shortened budget creation processes; using real time information
• Creating simple, pragmatic scenarios for uncertain budget items
• Creating more detailed cost & working capital drivers

Course Outcomes:

• At the end of this course you will have had the opportunity to think critically about your own budget process and how you can improve it.
• You will have considered steps that you might take to create a more meaningful budget & how your budgeting process can react to changes in the business environment.
• You will also have refreshed some ideas on different styles and approaches to budgeting & have the opportunity to consider whether these may be appropriate for your organisation.

Sutiable for: Anyone involved in the budget creation and delivery process, decision makers who can change budgeting processes. 

CPD hours: ICAEW’s CPD Regulations are changing. From 1 November 2023, members and other professionals regulated by ICAEW will need to complete a minimum number of hours’ CPD per year, some of which will need to be verifiable. Attending events like this could contribute to 2 hours and 10 minutes of verifiable CPD, so long as you can demonstrate that the content is relevant to your role.

How are the courses delivered?
All the Essentials CPD courses are run by live webinar on Zoom. Once the live date has passed the courses are available as on demand recordings.

How long will be the webinar be?
Total running time for the live webinars is 2hours and twenty minutes.

The live webinars are split into two 50 minute sessions with a 10 minute comfort break in between and ending with a 30 minute Q&A session with the speaker.

How do I attend a live webinar?
Once you've booked on you will receive an email with your booking confirmation, one week before the live event you will receive the zoom registration link and further joining instructions.

How do I access the course notes?
The course slide deck will be shared with the Zoom link.

What if I miss the live date?
The live webinar will be recorded and offered on-demand 24-48 hours after the live course.

Can I watch the recording after attending the live course?
No, delegates can either attend the live session OR have access to the on demand recording, not both.
